Wearables Are Changing the Way We Monitor Patients
An interesting example comes from a systematic review published in BJS Open, which analyzed 78 studies involving more than 5,000 patients following abdominal surgery. Researchers identified 31 different wearable devices used to monitor heart rate, respiratory rate, oxygen saturation, temperature, physical activity, and sleep. Patients were monitored for periods ranging from a few hours to three months.
The findings highlight the potential of wearables to provide a more continuous view of a patient’s health status compared to individual measurements taken during clinical visits. This is one of the reasons why wearables are becoming increasingly important in clinical research and decentralized clinical trials.
